goats, and f*ck your big ideas 🐐
Like many of you, I’m addicted to the podcast Maintenance Phase
(so much so that they are my only Patreon subscription)
I recently listened to a bonus episode from back in August where Michael Hobbes said, AND I QUOTE:
“Fuck ideas”
He said ideas don’t matter as much as people think they do.
A lot of what makes something work is implementation.
In this bonus episode, Michael and Aubrey talk about one of those programs in Africa where they give away goats, how it transforms the local economy, changes lives, an incredible initiative with a grand vision, yada yada yada.
This idea worked so well after the first run; the folks who started it sold this idea all over the place, and it quickly gained traction in several areas.
ALTHOUGH - while they had the grand vision and enthusiasm, they lacked the necessary systems to support the program effectively.
🐐 They never put in place a process for reviewing outcomes in any meaningful way
🐐 They didn’t adjust their systems for different areas or circumstances,
🐐 They wanted to scale without doing the work needed
🐐 They kept coming up with MORE ideas instead of ensuring the sustainable success of their first one.
This episode was giving me big-time flashbacks.
The clients I work with have BIG visions. They are constantly downloading inspiration from the muses. My job is to catch those big visions and create the systems that support them.
